Blessing or Curse

If a man loudly blesses his neighbor
early in the morning,
it will be taken as a curse.
PROVERBS 27:14 (NIV)

Blessings are good things, right? And words quoted from God’s Word are always appropriate, correct? Well maybe not. There’s a time and place for everything, even for blessings and Bible quoting. (Proverbs 27:14)

Here we learn that execution and timing are everything. Nobody wants to be “loudly blessed” early in the morning; in those circumstances, Scripture itself says that even the most Biblical blessing will sound to the hearer like a “curse.”

Keep that in mind when you speak to someone in great pain. Is the time right for your words, even words from Scripture? Or are they too loud for hurting ears? Make up your mind now to be a blessing instead of a well-intentioned curse.

Everyone enjoys a fitting reply; it is wonderful to say the right thing at the right time. (Proverbs 15:23 NLT)

Words kill, words give life;
they’re either poison or fruit –
you choose.
