Perspectives, Words of Endurance

The Lord will stay with you
as long as you stay with Him!
Whenever you seek Him,
you will find Him.
2 CHRONICLES 15:2 (NLT)

The book of Psalms sings of Joseph’s abduction, slavery and captivity. “They bruised his feet with shackles,” we are told, and “his neck was put in irons” (PSALM 105:18) An old translation renders the last phrase of that verse, “the iron entered into his soul.” Somehow, the iron of Joseph’s shackles entered into his soul. He became strong and wise, just and merciful; he would be called “the prince among his brothers.” And through it all, he cultivated a strong sense of God’s presence.

How did he do it? How can we? How can we avoid bitterness when our dreams have been torn away? How can we maintain our walk with God when he allows our youth to be pillaged and our life to plunge into deep shadow and prolonged pain? We can learn much from Joseph.

Though attacked and wrongfully accused, though he endured suffering and cruelty, Joseph became fruitful beyond his dreams. Over and over again, Scripture tells us that “the Lord was with Joseph.” Why was He with him? Joseph set his heart on walking with God, and he did not allow any hardship, any adversity, any tragedy to come between him and his God. That relationship took priority over everything all of his life.

Joseph understood the hard realities of life. But he also clung to the conviction that a sovereign God rules over people’s affair. Wherever Joseph found himself, he served with all his heart, placing full trust in the Lord to care for him and vindicate him.

Joseph teaches us that when we seek God’s kingdom first, we may live content no matter our circumstances. With such a mindset – with such a Lord – circumstances cannot defeat us.

But while Joseph was there in prison,
the Lord was with him;
He showed him kindness and
granted him favor …
GENESIS 39:20-21 (NIV)

Falsely accused and subsequently jailed, Joseph was (again) the victim of a terrible injustice. His plight was like the cancer victim abandoned by her spouse or the man permanently disabled by a drunk driver. He was innocent!

But what is remarkable about Joseph’s life isn’t the series of injustices he endured, but rather how he responded in the face of those terrible trials. He never blamed God. He never turned away from God. He never lashed out at those around him. Regardless of the situation, Joseph’s relationship with his Lord never changed.

God does not give his children a “hall pass” to skip out on the negative effects of living in a sinful world. He gives us something much better … his own sustaining, encouraging presence.

You will show me the way of life,
granting me the joy of your presence
and the pleasures of living with you forever.
PSALM 16:11 (NLT)

Rachel began to give birth and had great difficulty.
And as she was having great difficulty in childbirth,
the midwife said to her,
“Don’t be afraid, for you have another son.”
GENESIS 35:16-17 (NIV)

As we pray and immerse ourselves in the Bible, we can’t help but discover that we are of infinite worth to God. He cares so deeply about the needs of our hearts that he has seen fit to record the heart cries of others who struggled before us so that we would know we could express our deepest longings to him. He who has so tenderly numbered the hairs on our heads surely knows and understands our physical and emotional needs.

“What’s the price of a pet canary?
Some loose change, right?
And God cares what happens to it
even more than you do.
He pays greater attention to you,
down to the last detail –
even numbering the hairs on your head!
So don’t be intimidated by all this bully talk.
You’re worth more than a million canaries.

“… I will be with you.”
GENESIS 31:3 (NIV)

When I was diagnosed with cancer my prayer wasn’t for God to take the cancer away. It wasn’t a demand for an explanation. It was simply my heart crying out to God in total helplessness.

I needed a strength beyond my own to deal with what was ahead. The disease that had invaded my body could cause me to lose the things in life that were most important to me and I was powerless to change it.

So my prayers gave voice to my deepest needs and longings – to hold onto life and to keep on being a husband and a dad and ultimately to know that God really did care for me and would be with me.

My health may fail
and my spirit may grow weak,
but God remains the strength of my heart;
He is mine forever.

PSALM 73:26 (NLT)

As you endure this divine discipline,
remember that God is treating you as his own children.
For our earthly fathers disciplined us for a few years,
doing the best they knew how.
But God’s discipline is always good for us,
so that we might share in his holiness.
HEBREWS 12:7,10 (NLT)

Hardships do not come into our lives to make us spiritually feeble, weak, lame and disabled. Such a thing is possible only if we allow it to happen. If we will choose instead to consider hardships as God’s discipline and then allow the difficulties of life to build into us the heavenly trio of holiness, righteousness and peace, we will watch ourselves grow from adolescence into spiritual maturity.

In my own growth it was important for me to understand that hardship was to be a part of my life, because so many had told me that God did not intend for me to suffer. It was important for me to look at God as my Father, training me and disciplining me because He loved me, just as my earthly parents had.

My parents had begun the job of disciplining me, but because they, too, were imperfect, the job of preparing me for maturity was incomplete. God will continue to train me where my earthly parents left off, and He has chosen to use hardship as one of His primary tools.

Then he prayed, “Oh Lord,
God of my master Abraham,
Give me success today,
and show kindness to my master Abraham.
GENESIS 24:12 (NIV)

We tend to think that prayer should come easily to us, and many times it does. But prayer in the face of suffering can be a different story.

We are often surprised when prayer becomes difficult, when it seems fruitless, when the needs of the moment are so overwhelming that we don’t know where to begin. During these times it’s easy to lose confidence in our ability to pray or in God’s willingness to respond.

The truth is, prayer can be extremely hard work. Oswald Chambers describes it as “not a preparation for work, it is work. Prayer is not a preparation for the battle, it is the battle.”

And that about wraps it up.
God is strong, and he wants you strong.
So take everything the Master has set out for you,
well-made weapons of the best materials…
God’s Word is an indispensable weapon.
In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare.
Pray hard and long.

God heard the boy crying,
and the angel of the Lord called to Hagar
from heaven and said to her,
“What is the matter Hagar? Do not be afraid;
God has heard the boy crying as he lies there.
Lift the boy up and take him by the hand,
for I will make his into a great nation.”
GENESIS 21:17-18 (NIV)

“Lord, thanks for putting the warning sign up there that tells us we will suffer, that suffering is a part of life in this fallen world. But thanks also for allowing us – for allowing me – the freedom to express my fears about the future. For only when I do so am I able to realize my dependence upon the One who understands my suffering better than anyone. Because he did not lose heart when He suffered, I, too, can find the strength to live courageously in my own difficult circumstances. Amen!”

And let us run with endurance the race God has set before us.
We do this by keeping our eyes on Jesus,
the champion who initiates and perfects our faith.
Because of the joy awaiting him,
He endured the cross, disregarding its shame.
Now he is seated in the place of honor beside God’s throne.
Think of all the hostility he endured from sinful people;
then you won’t become weary and give up.
HEBREWS 12:1-3 (NLT)

Perspective and Promises

Now the LORD was gracious to Sarah as he had said,
and the LORD did for Sarah what he had promised.
GENESIS 21:1 (NIV)

The problem with pain is that it forces us to live in the moment, to deal with its unrelenting presence. That narrow, unpleasant perspective, like blinders on a horse, prevents us from clearly seeing the past (where God displayed his faithfulness to us) and the future (where the fulfillment of his promise awaits us).

Bound by this thin sliver of time, we forget that God is not bound by time. He exists outside of its minutes and millennia. Promises that seem impossible from our limited perspective are totally possible from his. He will keep every promise he has made to his children, no matter how unattainable they seem at the time.

My comfort in my suffering is this: Your promise preserves my life.
PSALM 119:50 (NIV)

And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant
I am making between me and you
and every living creature with you,
a covenant for all generations to come:
I have set my rainbow in the clouds,
And it will be the sign of the covenant
between me and earth.”
GENESIS 9:12-13 (NIV)

After Dave’s career ended, we lived for 19 years at the base of the front range of the Rocky Mountains. The sky is big and beautiful and the cloud formations breathtaking. Many storms form over the Rockies and then come over us. The lightning can be spectacular, and our family would watch it as if it were a fireworks show.

My favorite scene was after the storm rolled through – the sun would find openings in the clouds to peek its way through. The shining rays of sunlight would color the drab landscape of the valley below with various shades of light. While the heavenly play of light through dark clouds was a fairly common occurrence, it never escaped our notice. Many times our family would be driving along the highway down the hill from where we lived and Tiffany would say, “Oh! Look! God is smiling down on us again.”

When the sun finally comes out, we often see a rainbow. The beauty of the rainbow after the storm reminds us of God’s promises. The storm may be violent, dark – even frightening. Yet the Lord has promised never to leave us or forsake us. He will be with us always.

For your Kingdom is an everlasting kingdom.
You rule throughout all generations.
The Lord always keeps his promises;
he is gracious in all he does.
PSALM 145:13 (NLT)

Through The Trials

Then Noah built an altar to the Lord and, taking some of all the clean animals and clean birds, he sacrificed burnt offerings on it.

GENESIS 8:20 (NIV)

How did Noah and his family fare as they watched for the sign that their trial was over? What lessons did they review as they stumbled – giving thanks – out of the ark that had confined them for so long?

Thank God for the trials! How would we grow without the shifting and shaping of God’s hand in our lives? How would we learn? How would we ever experience the power of God’s presence if we didn’t get into the valleys? I know I learned more in the valleys than I ever did on the mountaintops.

Although I hope for better health, what I need to rest in is the promise of God that will sustain me in all circumstances, no matter what. I think most of us (including me) spend too much time seeking a way out of a situation rather than pleading with God for a way through it.

I’ve learned to be quite content whatever my circumstances. Whatever I have, wherever I am, I can make it through anything in the One who makes me who I am.
