Endurance for the Journey, Featured

Do Not Lose Heart

Therefore, we do not lose heart.
Thou outwardly we are wasting away,
yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day.
For our light and momentary troubles
are achieving for us an eternal glory
that far outweighs them all.
2 CORINTHIANS 4:16-17 (NIV)

We should never make light of the hardships and suffering people endure here on earth. No pain feels “light and momentary” while we are in its throes. There is no comparing pain, either; everyone suffers differently and uniquely.

But the fact is, any pain – whether great or small – is momentary in light of eternity. As Paul wrote, “I consider that that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18).

There is great comfort in knowing that our suffering will come to an end, that “this too shall pass.” And there is even greater comfort in knowing that “glory awaits. This is the divine trade we make, an exchange of all that we have in return for all that God has. I’m not sure what He gets out of the deal, but it’s one I wouldn’t dream of turning down.

So be truly glad.
There is wonderful joy ahead, even though
you must endure many trials for a little while.
These trials will show that your faith is genuine.
It is being tested as fire test and purifies gold –
though your faith is far more precious than mere gold.
So when your faith remains strong through many trials,
It will bring you much praise and glory and honor
On the day when Jesus Christ is revealed to the whole world.
1 PETER 1:6-7 (NLT)
