God of the Details

Read Exodus 22

I often hear suffering people say they don’t pray about “the minor stuff,” the minutia of burdens that don’t make the front page of conversation. When I ask them why, the answer is always the same. It goes something like this: “God has bigger problems to take care of. He isn’t interested in my little worries and issues …”

My reaction is quick, intense and to the point: “SAYS WHO?” The God of Exodus 21:27 is concerned about missing teeth! The God of Exodus 22:5 has an opinion about grazing rights! In Exodus 22:6 He warns potential pyromaniacs that they could be held liable for damages caused by their dangerous obsession. He goes on to address wounded livestock, borrowing from neighbors and missing garments. You can’t get much more minor than that!

Believing that God doesn’t care about our every burden is like a parent saying to a child. “Only come to me when your injuries require hospitalization. I don’t do slivers, night mares or missing dolls.” If God isn’t interested in every detail of my life, why else would He number every hair on my head?

What is the price of two sparrows – one copper coin?
But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground
without your Father knowing it.
And the very hairs on our head are all numbered.
So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God
than a whole flock of sparrows
