Stages in the Journey

Here are the stages in the journey of the Israelites
when they came out of Egypt by divisions
under the leadership of Moses and Aaron.
At the Lord’s command
Moses recorded the stages in their journey.
NUMBERS 33:1 (NIV)

Like the Israelites, Jan and I learned that the desert wilderness is part of the landscape of faith – and every bit as essential as the highlands.

On the mountaintop we are overwhelmed with God’s presence. In the wilderness we are overwhelmed by His absence. Both places should bring us to our knees, one in awe, the other in dependence.

One by one the wilderness took from us every source of strength we had depended upon in place of God. It took away our physical health, our mental and emotional health, our church, our friends, and – for a time – it even took us away from each other.

We were forced to turn to God … because there was nowhere else to turn. How could we have learned His great comfort and sufficiency in our lives any other way? He knew just what He was doing … It was His love that led us into that wilderness.

It is always good to remember the faithfulness of God!

Give thanks to Him who led His people
through the wilderness.
His faithful love endures forever.
PSALM 136:16 (NLT)
