The Body of Christ is a big part of the delivery system
of healing and growth that God has in store for His people.

When he was a teenager, Henry Cloud dreamed of becoming a professional golfer and he was well on his way to fulfilling that dream. A successful amateur, he was recruited to play NCAA golf in college. But the dream began to fade when he developed severe tendon trouble in his left arm. Doctors couldn’t figure out the cause or how to treat it. Henry’s game suffered and after two years of hampered play, he quit. The dream was over.



One afternoon, alone in his room, Henry tried to figure out what to do next. The enormity of his loss became unbearable. He explains,



“I looked at various interests and majors only to arrive at a deep emptiness and sense of darkness regarding the future. I was at the end of myself. Thoughts about all aspects of life that were not working went through my head like a whirlwind. What will I do? How will I find my way in my career and in my relationships? How can I change into a person who is not so depressed and unable to figure all this out?”



Although the door to professional golf was shut God had other plans for Henry. Slowly Henry’s perspective on what his life would be began to change. He committed his life and his uncertain future to God. He joined a Bible study that helped anchor him spiritually. Yet he still struggled with depression. One day he confided to a Christian friend,



“I asked God to help me but I don’t feel any better. I thought that if you prayed God would make you feel better.”



Because he still felt depressed Henry concluded that God wasn’t doing much in his life but that shattered perspective would change too. Henry’s friend introduced him to Bill and his wife, Julie. Bill was a wonderful Bible teacher who helped Henry discover his love of the Bible and theology. Through conversations with Bill and Julie, Henry discovered that the emptiness he was feeling “was not emptiness at all but sadness and hurt about the loss of my dream to play professional golf.”



As Henry worked through the counseling material Julie gave him and began applying what he was learning, the burden began to lift from his shoulders. Before long, he knew God was calling him to go into Christian counseling.



“Sometime later,” Henry continues, “I realized my depression and feeling of emptiness were gone! I actually felt good about life and about me.” But
Henry was also disappointed and disillusioned. “God had changed my life. My life had taken a 180-degree turn. But God had not healed me when I sought healing. He had not supernaturally ‘zapped’ me.”



As he talked to people about his disappointment, Henry heard the same thing over and over, “God uses people, too.” Henry “hated” hearing that phrase. I wanted God to touch my depression instantaneously and help me. Instead, he used people.”



Henry’s difficulty was that he had always considered God’s supernatural intervention to be true spiritual healing – Plan ‘A.’ He thought that when God used people to heal it was the ‘inferior’, although effective, Plan ‘B.’



“I accepted that I was one of those people who got Plan ‘B.’ So there I was, grateful and somewhat disappointed at my grade ‘B’ healing. It was good but it felt more like sitting in the bleachers than in the box seats.”



Then Henry read a Scripture passage that changed his perspective on how God had been working in his life:

From him the whole body,
joined and held together
by every supporting ligament,
grows and builds itself up in love,
as each part does its work.
EPHESIANS 4:16 (NIV)



Henry couldn’t believe it so he read it again. Plan ‘B’ wasn’t second rate after all! People helping people were in fact God’s Plan ‘A’!



While Henry was waiting for God to share his grace through supernatural ‘zapping’, God was giving it to him through His people.



“I was waiting for Him to speak to me directly; He was speaking to me through his people. I was waiting for him to give me direction in life; he was the strength behind the direction people were giving me. I was waiting for him to heal my depression; He sent special people to comfort me.”



Henry’s perspective on life and how God would work in his life had been completely transformed. He no longer felt as if he had gotten Plan ‘B’ – as if he had received a lesser healing.



“I had received God himself and the healing he had always planned to give through his people.”




We are so thankful that God used Henry Cloud and John Townsend to bring healing to the both of us through their writings and counseling sessions. God restored our shattered perspectives through these two men of God who through their own God gifting brought us to a healing place and there we saw the power of God.

A healthy spirit conquers adversity,
but what can you do when the spirit is crushed?
PROVERBS 18:14 (THE MESSAGE)



Sometimes our perspective shatters so violently when adversity hits that we are deeply wounded and our spirit is crushed. And when our spirit is crushed it may seem like we will never conquer that adversity but that is when we need the help of others to heal physically, emotionally and spiritually. The following suggestions are steps you can take when your spirit is crushed and your perspective is shattered.



SEE YOUR DOCTOR if you think you may be depressed. Whenever we experience adversity and the stress from that adversity – it affects our emotions that in turn will affect us physically in a negative way. You may experience insomnia or sleep all the time. You may experience weight gain or weight loss. You may feel overwhelmed, numb and unable to experience the joy that you once felt before the adversity. Both of us experienced a season of clinical depression and we went to see our physician who developed a treatment plan for the both of us. He helped us heal physically.



FIND A COUNSELOR. We also needed objective Godly wisdom from a person who was trained in dealing with physical, emotional and spiritual wounds. Our counselors helped us understand what had happened to us and why. They also led us to God’s truth and we learned new and better ways to respond to our adversity. They helped us heal emotionally.



CONNECT WITH PEOPLE WHO CAN PROVIDE SPIRITUAL SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT. It is so healing to be a part of a Christian community who loves and supports you without judgment. We were part of grace-filled church community who loved us through the ugliness of our journey. The emotional support, spiritual wisdom and prayers we received were like a breath of fresh air – a refreshing wind from God! They helped us heal spiritually.



AND BE ASSURED …

And this same God who takes care of me
will supply all your needs from his glorious riches,
which have been given to us in Christ Jesus.

Early one morning, Gehazi, servant of the prophet Elisha, decided to take a walk around the city of Dothan. He was greatly dismayed to discover that during the night a huge army of troops and chariots had encircled the city. Terrified, he cried out to Elisha …


“Oh, sir, what will we do now?
2 KINGS 6:15 (NLT)



The prophet calmly told him not to fear. He assured him that …


“For there are more on our side than on theirs!”
2 KINGS 6:16 (NLT)



How confusing those words must have seemed! After all, anyone could see there was no escaping the army that surrounded them. But Elisha saw something Gehazi could not; Elisha saw the situation from God’s perspective, so he was not deceived by appearances.



Then Elisha prayed …


“O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!”
2 KINGS 6:17 (NLT)



And suddenly Gehazi saw something he never imagined was there: the enemy was itself surrounded by the Lord’s army of horses and chariots of fire! Like Gehazi, we need to remember that what we see isn’t necessarily the whole truth. We need to see the truth from God’s perspective.

I had been enduring an extremely difficult trial in life. For months there seemed to be no improvement or resolution. It seemed as if my prayers for a way of escape were being ignored. Finally, I decided to create my own mini-escape. I lived fairly close to the Pacific Ocean so hoping for at least a few hours of refreshment I headed toward a favorite spot – high above the crashing waves.



After parking my car, I walked toward a large, glass-enclosed observatory perched on the edge of a bluff overlooking the ocean. As I stepped inside my eyes were immediately drawn to the north window. There in the distance, I saw an approaching storm. The scene was spectacular but the clouds, fog, and restless ocean made my heart sink. A powerful rainstorm was on its way. So much for my outdoors plans.



I quickly moved to the east window. Although it was quiet in the observatory I looked out onto a noisy scene of wind-swept chaos in the parking lot. Kids, cars, and carriages scurried in all directions. Dads hastily unloaded the family gear – backpacks, cameras, binoculars and picnic baskets – as moms frantically tried to bundle up their children to protect them from the chilling wind. I couldn’t hear their frustrated words but their faces told the whole story. I didn’t watch this scene too long – it made me tired.



With relief I stepped over to the south window. Seemingly oblivious to the brisk wind and incoming mist, a young couple wrapped in a blanket sat on a small patch of weathered lawn. Their obvious affection for one another must have driven away the discomfort of the biting wind. They weren’t just taking in the view – they were experiencing it. From my sheltered viewpoint, I found myself experiencing it with them.



Other observers moved in my direction so I felt compelled to leave that heart-warming scene and take in the view from the west window. Standing alone, overlooking the immense expanse of the Pacific Ocean that stretched to the horizon, I felt unbelievably tiny. The reflection of the sun lay like a glimmering golden path on the water. I’d never seen the ocean quite like this and it brought tears to my eyes.



I closed my eyes to thank God for the awesome beauty of that place. At that moment He spoke to my heart showing me something I had never realized before. As I visually immersed myself in each view I had experienced a multitude of emotions – some positive – some not. I had experienced frustration, elation, sadness and awe yet I had not set foot outside the observatory. The only change was on which view I had chosen to focus.



How humbling it was to realize that in dealing with my personal trial I had been focusing on only one view. I had looked at the situation from only one viewpoint – finding a way out. I had not yet considered any other possibilities. That day I realized that God was far more interested in changing my perspective than in changing my circumstances.



No wonder my trial had been overwhelming. I needed a different view – a new perspective. And God in His mercy showed me that it was only a few steps away…

Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!

Do you remember that wonderful praise song “Give Thanks”? It brings back such wonderful memories for me. It was August 10th, 1989 a Thursday afternoon and I was standing on the mound in Candlestick Park getting ready to pitch against the Cincinnati Reds. As I stood there all I could hear were the words of a song I was singing on my way into the ballpark that day. That song was “Give Thanks”! I can’t begin to express to all of you how special that moment was and continues to be to this day.



You see, about ten months prior to that I had been diagnosed with cancer in my left pitching arm and told, “outside of a miracle I would never pitch again”. Now as I stood there waiting for the umpire to say “Play Ball”, those wonderful words consumed my heart and mind.

To this day, some 24 years later I still get overwhelmed when I think of this song and that moment in my life. Since then there have been many special moments when I’ve sung that song and felt so thankful for all God has done in my life through His Son, Jesus Christ!



That’s why I write this to you. Jan and I want you all to know how thankful we are for you! So many of you along the way have prayed for us, and continue to do so. So many of you have come alongside of us and encouraged us through some of the most difficult of times and continue to do so! So many of you have supported Endurance over the years and still do so! You all continue to be a constant reminder to us of God’s great love and faithfulness for us all through His Son, Jesus Christ!



As we near Thanksgiving let this be a reminder to be thankful for everything that we experience in life because God uses it all to draw us closer to His heart and through it all we will learn to trust Him more and more with all of life!!

I obviously need help!
I realize that I don’t have what it takes.
I can will it, but I can’t do it.
I decide to do good, but I don’t really do it;
I decide not to do bad, but then I do it anyway.
My decisions, such as they are, don’t result in actions.
Something has gone wrong deep within me
and gets the better of me every time …
I’ve tried everything and nothing helps.
I’m at the end of my rope.
Is there no one who can do anything for me?
Isn’t that the real question?

Knowing that I need an attitude adjustment is one thing but implementing the needed adjustment is a totally different story –the truth is it isn’t easy because there are times that I don’t have what it takes – I obviously need help! How about you? Who do you go to for help when you need to implement an attitude adjustment?



How encouraging is it to know the answer is Jesus Christ and it is to Him that we can go to for help …



The answer, thank God, is that Jesus Christ can and does.
He acted to set things right in this life of contradictions
where I want to serve God with all my heart and mind,
but am pulled by the influence of sin
to do something totally different.

God has been helping his children take on the attitude of Christ for a long time. God is always available to us. He will always hear our prayers for guidance and counsel because He promises …



The Lord says,
“I will guide you along the best pathway for your life.
I will advise you and watch over you.”
PSALM 32:8 (NLT)



Not only that but we can ask Him through the Holy Spirit to open our eyes to the Scriptures so that we can understand the Truth of His Word in a life-changing way because …



God means what he says.
What he says goes.
His powerful Word is sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel,
cutting through everything, whether doubt or defense,
laying us open to listen and obey.
Nothing and no one is impervious to God’s Word.
We can’t get away from it—no matter what.

Need an attitude adjustment? Then turn with me to the One who is more than able…

No one who is alive and breathing has a perfect attitude all of the time. I know that I certainly don’t! Although most of us readily admit that our attitudes need adjustment – especially if suffering has revealed some of our less desirable attitude tendencies – but the thought of actually changing our attitudes can be overwhelming.



Instead of owning up to our bad attitudes we often times justify them by reasoning – “I’ve been sick for so long. If anyone has earned the right to be pessimistic it is me.” Or we may choose to blame others when our attitudes fall short – “My family life was so hard growing up that I learned to be self-centered just to survive.”



At other times we may refuse to see the harm in our attitudes – “So what if I have a pity party? It isn’t hurting anyone.” And sometimes we simply deny our need to deal with problem attitudes – “My attitude just isn’t that big a deal. Look at all the other things I am doing right.”



If any of these justifications sound familiar to you then take note. There is one unchanging and inescapable reason for correcting our bad attitudes – God tells us to!



You must have the same attitude that Christ Jesus had.
PHILIPPIANS 2:5 (NLT)



Why would God care about our attitudes?



First of all, we are God’s beloved children and bad attitudes are detrimental to us and the life He wants us to live. Bad attitudes create distance in our relationship with Him and lead to brokenness and dysfunction in our relationships on earth. God wants to heal our brokenness and set us free from attitudes that perpetuate pain.



Second, as God’s beloved children we are heirs to all of His creation. He wants us to mature into that heritage and position. He wants us to have the same attitudes that Jesus did because these attitudes befit our divine nature and calling. When we are hurting we easily lose sight of who we are and where we are headed. So dealing with our attitudes is a foundational part of our training to be more like Christ.



In his book, A Small Book About God, Roy Hicks, Jr. sums up why our attitudes are so important…



“You will never become what you want to become,
let alone what God wants you to become,
until you become a person who accepts responsibility
for who you are and
begin to respond in a godly way to life’s circumstances.”



I know that there are many times I need an attitude adjustment and I run out of excuses forcing me to face the fact that I need to make an attitude change. And after many failed attempts to change my attitude in my own strength, there is nothing left for me to do but to allow the God to transform me into a new person by changing the way I think. So my advice to you if you are in need of an attitude adjustment…



Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world,
but let God transform you into a new person
by changing the way you think.
Then you will learn to know God’s will for you,
which is good and pleasing and perfect.

An Awakening from Brokenness, Prayer, Words of Endurance

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God,
and he will give it to you.

And so I asked God to reveal the truth about myself – I asked God to give me the wisdom and insight into the reason why the history of my life kept repeating itself. He answered my prayer by revealing my imposter.



You may ask what is an imposter? Well I learned about my imposter – my false self –the masks I wore – when I read Abba’s Child by Brennan Manning. His words explained …



Impostors are preoccupied with acceptance and approval. Because of their suffocating need to please others, they cannot say no with the same confidence with which they say yes. And so they overextend themselves in people, projects and causes, motivated not by personal commitment but by the fear of not living up to others’ expectations.



The impostor is the classic codependent. To gain acceptance and approval, the false self suppresses or camouflages feelings, making emotional honesty impossible.



The imposter prompts us to attach importance to what has no importance, clothing with a false glitter what is least substantial and turning us away from what is real. The false self causes us to live in a world of delusion.



The imposter is a liar.

I had always known that I was a classic codependent. I knew and claimed to all that I could be the poster child for Codependents Anonymous! But what I did not know was that my codependent lifestyle – my people pleasing that I so believed to be a “spiritual” attribute – was nothing more than a lie that I was portraying for others so that I might receive their acceptance and approval.



The lie that I lived was the mask that I wore to hide the true me from others – even from God. But oh how elated I was that it was not my human viewpoint by which I was seen and judged because when I trusted Jesus as my Savior I was given a gift from God. I became a new person – a Saint – His child – and His approval and acceptance was not based upon my performance!



What Good News for the Child of God!!! Oh how freeing was that for me!!!! How freeing is that for you too!!!!



So we have stopped evaluating others
from a human point of view.
At one time we thought of Christ merely
from a human point of view.
How differently we know him now!
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ
has become a new person.
The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
And all of this is a gift from God,
who brought us back to himself through Christ.

Going through the motions doesn’t please you,
a flawless performance is nothing to you.

when my pride was shattered.

Each time I have hit bottom – I am left feeling broken and weak. What is even more painful for me is that I have no one to blame but myself for my present condition so I feel nothing but shame and guilt. But I have learned that whenever I find myself in this place of brokenness what I need to do is to remember. Remember how in times before – when my pride was shattered – none of it was unnoticed by God. I need to remember …



Since God assured us,
“I’ll never let you down, never walk off and leave you,”
we can boldly quote,
God is there, ready to help;
I’m fearless no matter what.
Who or what can get to me?
HEBREWS 13:5-6 (THE MESSAGE)



I also need recall that it has been my past experience that …



“Often breakdowns lead to breakthroughs.”

And then I can reassure myself that …



Meanwhile, the moment we get tired in the waiting,
God’s Spirit is right alongside helping us along.
If we don’t know how or what to pray, it doesn’t matter.
He does our praying in and for us,
making prayer out of our wordless sighs, our aching groans. He knows us far better than we know ourselves,
He knows our pregnant condition,
and keeps us present before God.
That’s why we can be so sure that every detail in our lives
of love for God is worked into something good.

When I remember this promise from God – this Eternal Truth gives me the courage to not lose heart –to not give up – to keep on enduring the journey. May His Word provide you the endurance for your journey when you remember …



So we’re not giving up. How could we!
Even though on the outside it often looks like things are falling apart on us,
on the inside, where God is making new life,
not a day goes by without his unfolding grace.
These hard times are small potatoes
compared to the coming good times,
the lavish celebration prepared for us.
There’s far more here than meets the eye.
The things we see now are here today, gone tomorrow.
But the things we can’t see now will last forever.

Healing, Pain, Prayer, Walking Beside the Weak & Wounded, Words of Endurance

I sought my soul, but my soul I could not see.
I sought my God, but God eluded me.

People in pain often live a roller-coaster existence. They may appear fine one day and be totally withdrawn the next. So walking beside a family member or friend who is weak or wounded can be a challenge.



Identifying a suffering person’s greatest needs can also seem impossible because there are so many needs – physically, emotionally and spiritually. To make things more difficult – hurting people sometimes attempt to quiet their inner turmoil by trying to distract themselves from their pain. With a seemingly impenetrable focus, they deal primarily with tasks that require little or no emotional output. They can be oblivious to other people and responsibilities. No wonder it can be difficult to know how to help!



Although it can be difficult to walk beside a hurting person – it is also a privilege. God does not want any of us to walk alone. Our presence can be God’s gift of grace and comfort to that friend or family member. But in order to be vessels of God’s grace and comfort it is best if we cultivate and prepare the right perspective and the right heart attitude. When we do -we are better equipped to walk beside the weak and wounded and offer the hope and encouragement they so desperately need.



Be Led by the Holy Spirit



O LORD, you have examined my heart
and know everything about me.
You know when I sit down or stand up.
You know my thoughts even when I’m far away.
PSALM 139:1-2 (NLT)



As the Psalm states – God alone knows our thoughts and hearts. So God knows best what our hurting friend needs at any given time.



Time after time during His earthly ministry, Jesus saw beyond the most obvious needs of hurting people to the most important ones. He was able to do this because He viewed people through the eyes of the Holy Spirit. As we allow the Holy Spirit to guide us and prompt us – He will faithfully reveal the deepest needs of those who hurt. The single most important expression of love and concern we can show our friend is to walk with God – to be led by His Holy Spirit. Because as Jesus expressed –



“Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches.
Those who remain in me, and I in them,
will produce much fruit.
For apart from me you can do nothing.”
JOHN 15:5 (NLT)



Be Filled with God’s Love



First Corinthians 13:8 tells us



“love never fails.”



Of course the love that never fails is God’s love not ours. Our love is too weak – too fickle. It is dependent on our moods, schedules and imperfect hearts. But God’s love is sincere, life giving and powerful. And it is there for the asking. So when we find ourselves needing to love those who are hard to love or needing to love – when we feel weak and overwhelmed – we can ask God to fill us with His love so that we have love to give.



Without God’s love whatever we do for the weak and wounded falls short. First Corinthians 13:3 is crystal clear –



“If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels
but have not love
I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal.”



Ouch! If we truly want to be God’s gift to a weak or wounded friend we need to ask Him to fill us with His love.



Pray First – Act Second



As Jesus went about His ministry on earth His sole agenda was to do the will of God –



“I do not seek My own will,
but the will of Him who sent Me.”
JOHN 5:30 (NASB)



Our agenda should be the same and we can discover God’s will through prayer. Everything we do for someone who is in pain is done best when it is bathed in prayer first. Through prayer we allow God to direct our steps.



This is what the LORD says—
your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel:
“I am the LORD your God,
who teaches you what is best for you,
who directs you in the way you should go.”
ISAIAH 48:17



As we are led by the Holy Spirit – as we are filled with God’s love – and as we pray first and allow God to direct our actions – we are then prepared to walk beside the weak and wounded – one of the greatest privileges in life. Prepare to be blessed as you bless others.



God chooses carefully those who would bring
His message of hope, comfort and love to His suffering children.
If you have been chosen to be God’s hands, mouth or feet for your friend,
God will bless you richly as you let Him teach you His gentle ways
and how to walk in His strength.
